BlogFrequently asked questions
What is a name day?
A name day is a date in the calendar associated with a given first name. In the Nordic tradition, names are assigned to fixed dates, and the same name recurs on the same date year after year. You can search any name and see which date its name day falls on.
How do I see today's moon phase?
The current moon phase appears on each day's calendar page, next to the sunrise and sunset times. The moon phases page lists the new moons, full moons and quarter phases for the whole year with their dates.
What week is it?
Weeks are numbered using the ISO 8601 standard: the week starts on Monday, and the first week of the year is the one containing the year's first Thursday. The current week number shows on the home page calendar and on the week page, which also lists the week's dates and name days.
What are flag days?
Flag days are dates on which the national flag is flown. Some are official flag days set by the state and others are established observances that mark holidays and notable occasions. The flag days page lists the dates for both.
Can I get name days and holidays on my phone?
Yes. Nordic Calendar is a free app for iPhone and Android that shows name days, holidays, flag days and moon phases even without a connection. Home screen widgets keep the day's details in view, and you can set yearly reminders for name days. The same data is also available as calendar feeds you can subscribe to in your own calendar.
Which holidays does the calendar show?
The calendar covers both fixed public holidays and movable ones that follow the church year, such as Easter and Pentecost. Movable dates are recomputed automatically for future years, and each holiday has its own page with the date and background.
